Sanctions for ADRV

Consequences of Anti-Doping Rules Violations

We know that most athletes comply with anti-doping rules. We are committed to protecting your reputation and sports performance.

We also know that some athletes choose to cheat - and we work hard to detect doping and suspend those athletes from sport.

We also recognise that some athletes may be more susceptible to the pressures of doping.

Remember, ignorance is no excuse, and negligence in anti-doping is looked upon with limited sympathy.

If you are found to be doping and banned from sport, this is only the beginning. The consequences of doping on your health, psychological and emotional well-being, as well as the social and financial consequences, can be devastating and have far-reaching effects.

Under the World Anti-Doping Code, the sanctions applied worldwide are consistent. The most common consequence an individual may face after committing a violation is a ban from sport, which in some circumstances may even be for life. Other consequences may include disqualification and the forfeiture of any medals, titles, points and prizes. The identity of the person who committed the violation is also subject to public disclosure, including the sport and anti-doping rule violated. Disclosure does not apply to Protected Persons.

If an Athlete participates in a team sport and is found to have committed an ADRV, the entire team may be affected. If more than two members of a team are found to have committed an ADRV in a competition period, the Competition Governing Body will impose appropriate sanctions on the entire team.

Facts you need to know

When it comes to anti-doping rule violations involving the presence or use of a Prohibited Substance, the basic rules are as follows:

If you intended to enhance sports performance by using a Prohibited Substance - regardless of the class of substance - the period of prohibition is four years.

In other cases, the standard ban period is two years. If you can prove that there was minor fault or negligence, the ban may be reduced to a minimum of one year.

Develop your resilience - work on this with your coach, wider support team, parents and other athletes throughout your sporting career.

Remember that most athletes are clean - athletes who dope are not the majority.
