Obtaining Therapeutic Use Exemptions: NADC Information Training for Medical Professionals

21 June 2024

On June 20, the National Anti-Doping Center, together with the NADC Therapeutic Use Exemptions Committee, conducted a training session for national team doctors, sports federation medical staff, and regional sports medicine specialists on the Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) obtaining procedures and protocols.

The training focused on practical issues related to the preparation of medical and other documents necessary for athletes to receive a TUE.

Participants were informed about such key stages of the TUE application process as:

- Document preparation: essential requirements for filling out applications, a list of required medical documentation, and diagnostic confirmations;

- Document submission: application submission procedures, adherence to established deadlines and protocols;

- Application review: criteria for evaluating applications, the verification process, and decision-making procedures.

The practical part of the training included working with real-life examples of TUE approvals and analyzing the reasons for TUE denials. Participants had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with common mistakes and discuss ways to avoid them.

"A Therapeutic Use Exemption allows athletes to receive necessary medical care without violating anti-doping rules. The NADC aims to ensure prompt and efficient processing of athletes` applications. In such a way we show our support to athletes and ensure clean and transparent sporting environment," noted NADC Director Serhiy Popyk at the start of the event.

Matviy Bidnyi, Acting Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine, emphasized the importance of supporting Ukrainian athletes, including timely and professional consideration of their TUE applications.

"I would like to thank the NADC for the serious attention paid to this issue, particularly for providing essential services to athletes, including medical support through TUEs," emphasized M. Bidnyi.

Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Oleksiy Nikitenko called on sports medicine doctors to systematically cooperate with the NADC, which will enhance their qualifications in anti-doping issues and improve their skills in submitting TUE applications.

The NADC will continue its efforts to improve the anti-doping knowledge of medical professionals, thus contributing to high standards of medical support for Ukrainian athletes.

Let's compete fairly!
